This review highlights the work of the Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development (the IESC) for the 2019–2020 financial year.

Key elements of the IESC’s work in 2019–2020 include:

  • providing 10 pieces of advice on proposed coal resource development projects
  • continuing to engage with stakeholders to explain our role and review how advice is adopted in regulatory decisions
  • publishing a fact sheet on the use of environmental water tracers in environmental impact assessments for coal seam gas and large coal mining developments
  • funding a research project to gather knowledge about coal mine voids in Queensland, through a scoping study to identify the location and potential impacts of these voids in the landscape.
