This review highlights the work of the Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development (the IESC) for the 2018 - 2019 financial year.

Key elements of the Committee’s work in 2018-19 include:

  • providing scientific advice on one coal seam gas proposal and 10 proposed coal development projects
  • continued engagement with stakeholders to explain our role and review how advice is adopted in regulatory decisions
  • an industry roundtable discussion to provide an opportunity for the coal resource industry to share their challenges and leading practices in developing Environmental Impact Statements
  • publication of three Explanatory Notes, developed to provide guidance and scientific methodologies and tools for specific components of Environmental Impact Assessments
